Women's Soccer Edged by Manhattan, 1-0

The Canisius College women's soccer team lost a hard-fought game to conference foe Manhattan on Friday night. The Jaspers scored an early goal via penalty kick and held on for the 1-0 victory.

Rachel Panullo scored the game's only goal in the 15th minute following a Canisius foul in the box. Sophomore Daniella Pettinari (right) recorded four saves in goal for the Griffs, while Alicia DeFino stopped all eight Canisius shots she faced, extending her school-record scoreless streak to 594:52.

After giving up the game's only goal, the Griffs controlled the tempo of the game, especially in the second half. Canisius registered nine shots, including five on goal, during the second stanza while Manhattan could only muster one shot on goal.

Canisius fell to 4-7-1 overall and 1-2-0 in conference play, while Manhattan extended its unbeaten streak to six games and improved to 5-3-4 and 2-0-1 against MAAC opponents.

The Griffs continue conference action on Sunday, squaring off against Saint Peter's. Game time is set for 1 p.m. in Jersey City.

Game Notes: A Canisius opponent scored via penalty kick for the first time since October 28, 2005 ... That game was also the last time the Griffs scored on a penalty kick ... Canisius outshot the Jaspers, 15-14 ... The Griffs fell to 9-6-1 all-time against Manhattan.
