Women's Soccer Cruises to Victory Over Youngstown State

Senior Amanda Janosky (right) scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Canisius College women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Youngstown State. The Griffs, who have won three of their last four games, end non-conference action with a 3-5-1 record.

“It was a great way to cap off the first half of the season going into conference action,” said Canisius head coach Meagan Dougherty. “It was great to put some goals on the board and it was great to get the shutout.”

Sophomore Sylvia Kowalski scored a goal in the Griffs' third-straight contest, while freshman Kasey Makowski recorded an assist for her first collegiate point.

Sophomore Daniella Pettinari anchored a strong defensive performance for the Griffs, recording three saves to earn her first collegiate shutout.

After the two teams battled to a scoreless first half, the Griffs came out with an extra boost in the second stanza. Sophomore Meagan Jones fired off two shots in the opening minute of the second period. The Penguins' goalkeeper saved the first shot but Jones answered right back and knocked the ball in the past the goalie only to see a Youngstown State defender there to back it up. Shortly after, junior Nikki Gabrielli sent a header toward the goal but the Penguins' goalie once again came up with a save.

The Penguins (1-9-1) could not keep the Griffs off the scoreboard for long. Janosky connected on her first goal of the afternoon 2:41 into the half. Janosky and Jones connected on a give-and-go and Janosky sent the ball in off the right post. Just five minutes later, Janosky setup Kowalski, who fired the ball in under the goalie's left side. Janosky added her second goal of the game in the 70th minute, making a great move to kick the ball up and past the defender and then firing the shot past the goalie for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

“I think we took control of the important moments in the game, especially in the second half,” Dougherty said. “That is what made the difference in the contest.”

The Griffs open conference play next weekend, hosting Fairfield and Iona. Canisius welcomes Fairfield to the Demske Sports Complex on Friday at 7 p.m. and then hosts Iona on Sunday at noon.
