Courtney Piar Honored as MAAC Pitcher of the Week

Canisius College pitcher Courtney Piar (right) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's Pitcher of the Week today after she went 1-0 with a save and a 0.66 ERA in three appearances last week as the Golden Griffins went 3-1 in four contests. Piar is the second Canisius pitcher to be honored this year by the MAAC; sophomore Lindsay Garbacz was also honored by the conference Feb. 28.

The 5-foot-8 junior improved her 2006 record to 6-4 with a complete game, two-hit win over long-time rival Niagara April 9. In that game, Piar struck out a career-high 12 batters and allowed just two base runners to reach second base. In her last five outings, she has allowed two runs on 11 hits while fanning 25 opposing batters in 20.2 innings of work.

Piar tossed three hitless innings to pick up her second save of the season April 6, at Youngstown State to give her eight in her career, which ranks third all-time in school history. She ranks third in the MAAC with 87 strikeouts and her 20 appearances in the circle this season is tied for first in the league with two other hurlers.

The Griffs are 15-16 overall and 5-1 in MAAC action after sweeping Niagara. Canisius has won six of its last eight games overall and 11 of its last 12 conference contests, dating back to last year. The Blue and Gold will play host to a pair of non-conference doubleheaders this week, starting April 11, against Cornell. Game time is set for 3 p.m., at the Demske Sports Complex.
