Toledo defeats Women's Soccer in Non-Conference Action

TOLEDO, Ohio - Paced by two goals and two assists apiece from junior Melissa Lesage and freshman Brittany Lawrence, the University of Toledo women's soccer team defeated Canisius College 8-0, Sunday afternoon at extremely warm and sunny Scott Park.
With the loss, the Griffs fall to 0-4 overall, while the Rockets improve to 2-1.

The eight goals scored by the Midnight Blue and Gold are the most with Evans at the helm of the program. The previous best was five at Valparaiso earlier this year.

Lesage opened the scoring at 19:13 off a great pass from Lawrence. The Mentor, OH, native led Lesage into space behind a pair of Canisius defenders and Lesage blasted a low, hard shot past the Griffs goalkeeper Christine Moran (McKean, Pa.).
Starting in the 23rd minute, the Rockets went on a torrid run that put the contest out of reach, netting more three goals before the intermission. Lesage opened the fireworks, by taking another great ball from Lawrence and depositing it into the net for her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Lesage also sparked Toledo's third goal at 24:59, sending a pass across the middle to freshman Kelly Langenback, who sent it onto the front of the net, where senior co-captain Corrie Hasenjager was in place to finish the goal. Sophomore Rebecca Hollis wrapped up Toledo's first-half scoring, once again beating the Canisius defense for a one-on-one score. Lesage was credited with the assist.

The Midnight Blue and Gold tacked on four more goals in the second half. Lawrence set the pace in the second stanza notching back-to-back, unassisted goals at 55:56 and 58:39 for her first collegiate scores.

UT scored its seventh goal at 80:17 off a free kick from freshman Lindsey Zembower to classmate Kristen Friedmann. Zembower placed a perfect ball into the middle of the Canisius penalty box that Friedmann was able to run onto and volley home for the score.
Freshman Sarah Crane rounded out Toledo's scoring at 88:31 with a score from classmate Cheryl May.
Toledo freshman goalkeeper Molly Patterson posted the team's first shutout of the season. Patterson collected three saves to earn her first collegiate win. Moran absorbed the loss for the Griffs, collecting nine saves in the first half. Junior keeper Crystal Wall (Syracuse, N.Y.) played the second half between the posts for Canisius making six stops.

The Griffs will continue the effort for win number one of the 2002 season Sept. 18 at St. Bonaventure at 4:00 p.m.
