Niagara University, NY ? The Canisius College men's soccer team scored a 2-1 victory in their 2001 season opener against St. Francis (PA) at the Canisius/Niagara Tournament Friday night. Mark Lammerhirt (Angola, N.Y.) scored the game-winner in the 90th minute to give the Golden Griffins the win.
St. Francis opened the scoring 6:50 into the second half on a penalty kick by Frank Ianni. The Griffs responded quickly when Al Franjoine (Lancaster, N.Y.) hit a perfect shot just out of the goalkeeper's reach from 18-yards out just 16 seconds later.
The Griffs will face Detroit Mercy, a 2-1 victor over Niagara University, Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Niagara University.
