Griffs Rout Siena In Season Finale

BUFFALO, NY - Senior Sean Semler scored five goals as the Canisius College men's lacrosse team routed Siena College 21-4 Sunday afternoon to secure the first winning season in the 12-year history of the Golden Griffin lacrosse program. Canisius finishes their 2001 season with a 7-6 overall record and a 4-5 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, while Siena falls to 1-12, 1-7 MAAC.

The Griffs opened the scoring with three straight goals enroute to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter. Siena would cut the deficit to two goals before the Griffs rattled off six unanswered goals to close the first half of play. Semler scored three of his goals in the first 30 minutes, while classmate Tim Spaulding added three goals to pace the Griffs' offense.

Canisius scored the only goal in the third quarter with 49 seconds remaining in the quarter on a man-up goal by senior Matt Schlegel. The Griffs would explode for 10 goals in the final quarter to complete the rout and send the Saints packing. Chris Tocin, Semler, and Nik Hall would add to an string of 10 straight goals over three quarters by Canisius before Siena finally notched another tally at the 4:41 mark to stop the Canisius surge of goals. The Griffs would add five more goals before the Saints scored their final tally, while Hall and senior Dave Wert tallied two final goals in the Canisius victory.

Sophomore Seth Vath made one save and allowed two goals, earning the win in the first half before being relieved by junior Mike Cicco, who stopped nine shots in the second half. Siena's Christopher Ameres posted eight saves for the Saints.
