Matt Hoover


• Returned to his alma mater as an assistant coach in July 2024
 
• Works with the team’s forwards and penalty kill unit

 

• Was active in the youth hockey scene in the greater Buffalo region prior to joining the Griffs coaching staff
 
• Worked as a player development coach for the LECOM Harborcenter Academy of Hockey
 
• Served as an assistant coach with the Buffalo Jr. Sabres U14 AAA program

 

• Appeared in 148 games for the Golden Griffins during his four seasons with the program (2016-20)
 
• Registered 47 goals and 52 assists for 99 career points
 
• Served as team captain for the 2019-20 season
 
• Garnered All-AHA Second Team accolades after finishing the season tied for the team lead in points (32) while ranking second on the squad in both goals (15) and assists (17)
 
• He also completed the 2019-20 campaign tied for second in the Atlantic Hockey scoring race with 29 points (14g, 15a) during league play.
 
• Freshman on the 2016-17 squad that claimed the program’s first Atlantic Hockey regular season championship. That season, he became the first freshman in more than 10 seasons to record a hat trick when he scored three times in a 4-0 victory against AIC at LECOM Harborcenter on Nov. 18, 2016

• A three-time AHA All-Academic Team honoree, Hoover graduated from Canisius with a bachelor’s degree in business in 2020

• Joined the Utah Grizzles of the ECHL for the 2020-21 season, appearing in 56 games and registering six goals and 13 assists for 19 points.

  

• Native of Brantford, Ontario
 
• Hoover and his wife, Logan, were married in August 2024 at the West Side Rowing Club in Buffalo
 
• Father, Ron, was drafted by the Hartford Whalers and played professional hockey for nine seasons, highlighted by 18 games with the Boston Bruins and St. Louis Blues
