Max Schrantz is in his third season with the Golden Griffin baseball program, now holding the title of assistant coach after spending the last two seasons as a graduate assistant coach.
The former catcher was a key factor in the growth of Canisius' backstops during the team's run to being the 2019 MAAC regular-season co-champions, serving as the graduate student manager. Specifically, Schrantz helped Billy Krull develop behind the plate, as the Griffs' catcher earned a selection to the 2019 Buster Posey Award Watch List.Â
In the summer of 2019, after his first season with the Griffs, Schrantz served as an assistant coach for the Kokomo Jackrabbits of the prestigious wood-bat collegiate Northwoods League. While in Kokomo, Schrantz worked with the hitters, catchers, and coached first base.
Â
Prior to his time at Canisius, Schrantz played two seasons at NCAA Division II Mercyhurst University, in which he was part of two nationally ranked teams, being voted No. 1 on multiple occasions. Before his time at Mercyhurst, Schrantz spent two seasons at NJCAA Division II Mercyhurst North East, where he was a First Team All-Region III selection his sophomore season.
Â
Following his playing career, Schrantz went back to his alma mater, Dunkirk High School, to serve as an assistant coach. Schrantz also served as the head coach of the Chautauqua County Senior All-Star Game in 2018.
Â
Outside the lines, Schrantz served in the baseball operations department for the Jamestown Jammers of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League.
