Women’s Soccer Tripped up by Sacred Heart in Metro Opener

Alexandra Riehl scored both goals and Kyran Thievon stopped all six shots she faced to lift Sacred Heart to a 2-0 victory over Canisius in Metro Conference women's soccer action Saturday at the Demske sports Complex in downtown Buffalo.
 
In the conference opener for both programs, Riehl found the back of the net in both halves to pace the Pioneers (6-0-0, 1-0-0 Metro) attack. Thievon and the Sacred Heart defense made Riehl's brace count as the Pioneers posted their fourth clean sheet of the season.
 
Freshman keeper Alexa Turmel got the start in goal for the Golden Griffins (3-3-0, 0-1-0 Metro) and finished with four saves.
 
Riehl staked the Pioneers to a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute as she collected a feed from Shea Kelleher on the right side before blasting a shot into the upper right-hand corner of the net from the top of the box for her first goal of the campaign.
 
Riehl doubled the SHU advantage in the 59th minute, heading home Lindsay McShea's corner kick to give the Pioneers a 2-0 cushion.
 
Canisius' best chance to get on the board came in the 68th minute when graduate student Melissa Groseibl got off a shot attempt from inside the box that Theivon was able to get a piece of before turning aside a second attempt on the rebound from Groseibl moments later to end the threat.
 
GAME NOTES
• Saturday's contest served as the sixth all-time meeting between Canisius and Sacred Heart.
• Canisius outshot Sacred Heart by a 15-10 margin for the contest, highlighted by an 8-3 edge in the first half.
• The Pioneers held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks taken in the game, including a 5-2 edge in the second half.
• Junior Azaria Fagan paced the Griffs with three shot attempts in the contest.
• Five field players – senior Elizabeth Cavanaugh and Mary Molloy, juniors Ava Pickard and Meghan Joerger and sophomore Emilia Nuttall -  played the full 90 minutes for the Griffs.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius travels to defending conference regular-season champion Fairfield for a road Metro matchup.
 
Start time for the contest between the Griffs and Stags is slated for noon at Lessing Field in Fairfield, Conn.
