Women’s Soccer Drops Conference Contest at Fairfield

Fairfield used goals from Ella Pisani and Amele Stewart to post a 2-0 victory over Canisius in Metro Conference women's soccer action Saturday at Lessing Field in Fairfield, Conn.
 
Pisani opened the scoring in the first half and Stewart added an insurance maker in the second half for the Stags (4-3-1, 2-0-0 Metro). Keeper Alyssa Gluting made one save to post her second shutout of the season.  
 
Freshman keeper Alexa Turmel got the start in goal for the Golden Griffins (3-4-0, 0-2-0 Metro) and finished with a career-high 15 saves as Fairfield posted a 28-5 shot advantage in the contest.
 
Pisani opened the scoring in the 41st minute when she redirected a cross from Payton Zaun towards the Canisius goal that hit the left post and bounced in to give the Stags the lead.
 
Stewart doubled the Fairfield margin to 2-0 less than 15 minutes into the second half, collecting a centering feed from Ashley McMahon unmarked and beating Turmel from the middle of the box.
 
Canisius' best opportunity to get on the board came in the 27th minute as a free kick into the box created an opportunity for senior Mary Molloy, but her shot from six yards out was turned aside by a Fairfield defender on the goal line.
 
GAME NOTES
• Fairfield held a nearly double-digit shot advantage in both halves on Saturday, posting a 16-2 margin in the first half and a 12-3 edge in the second half.
• Fairfield attempted six of the eight corner kicks taken during the contest
• Making her first career start, freshman midfielder Romane Lanni led Canisius with two shot attempts.
• Turmel's 15 saves were the most by a Canisius keeper since Jordan Spencer made 15 stops at Fairfield on Oct. 9, 2022.
• Graduate defender Melissa Groseibl made her first start of the season and played the full 90, one of five field players to do so.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius returns to action Sept. 19 when it hosts Rider in a Metro Conference contest.
 
Kickoff between the Griffs and Broncs is slated for 1 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex in downtown Buffalo.
