Women’s Soccer Earns Road Victory at Iona

Junior midfielder Ava Pickard scored the lone goal of the contest in the 78th minute to lift Canisius to a 1-0 victory over Iona in Metro Conference women's soccer action Monday at Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, N.Y.

Pickard notched her second goal in as many contests helped propel the Golden Griffins (5-4-0, 2-2-0 Metro) to victory. Freshman keeper Alexa Turmel recorded her fourth shutout of the season as she was not required to make a save in the contest.

Kayla Kalbaugh posted six saves in a losing effort for the Gaels (4-4-2, 1-3-1 Metro).

With the score tied with under 13 minutes to play in regulation, Canisius was awarded a free kick after an Iona foul just outside the box.

Pickard was chosen to take the kick, and the junior made the most of the opportunity as she placed a ball over the hands of Kalbaugh and into the Gaels goal to give the Griffs the lead.

Iona appeared to tie the game with just over five minutes remaining in regulation, but the play was deemed to be offsides, allowing Canisius to maintain the lead and eventually secure the one-goal victory.
