Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Falls at Buffalo Wednesday

Eva Blatz scored in the 67th minute to break a 1-1 tie and lift Buffalo to a 2-1 triumph over Canisius in collegiate women's soccer action Wednesday at Broadview Stadium in Buffalo, N.Y.
 
Gabriella Capra also scored for the Bulls (3-2-1). Lexie Thompson got the start in goal for the home team and recorded one save to earn the victory.  
 
Junior Azaria Fagan accounted for the lone goal for the Golden Griffins (3-2-0). Freshman keeper Alexa Turmel recorded four saves in the contest.
 
Blatz's game-winning goal came just five seconds after Fagan had brought the Griffs level. On the restart, Eva Poissant played the ball to Blatz just inside the midfield line, where she fired a ball towards the Canisius goal that Turmel was unable to handle, putting UB back in front.
 
That was all the support that Thompson and the Bulls defense needed as it limited the Griffs to one shot on goal over the final 23 minutes of regulation to secure the one-goal victory.
 
Earlier in the contest, UB opened the scoring less than two minutes into the contest as Emma Patti found a streaking Gabriella, who worked her way past a Canisius defender before slotting the ball past a diving Turmel to the Bulls the early lead.
 
Fagan brought the Griffs level midway through the second half, collecting a free kick from the foot of senior Mary Molloy inside the box before working her way around Thompson and sliding the ball into the goal to knot the score at 1-1, setting the stage for Blatz's game-winning strike seconds later.
 
GAME NOTES
• Wednesday's game marked the fourth straight road contest for the Griffs against the Bulls to end in a one-goal setback.
• UB outshot Canisius by a 14-2 margin for the contest, highlighted by a 9-2 advantage in the first half.
• The Bulls took five of the six corner kicks awarded in the contest, with Griffs lone corner coming in the first half.
• Fagan extended her goal scoring streak to a career-high matching three games with her second-half tally.
• Molloy notched her second career assist with the lone helper on Fagan's second-half goal.
• Six members of the starting 11 for Canisius played the full 90 on Wednesday.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius opens Metro Conference play Saturday when it squares off against Sacred Heart in a rematch of the title game of the 2025 MAAC Women's Soccer Championship.
 
Kickoff between the Griffs and Pioneers is slated for 1 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex.
