Volleyball Returns to Action at Crosstown Rival Buffalo

After opening the 2026 season at Youngstown State, the Canisius volleyball team returns to action this week by co-hosting the Canisius/UB Tournament with cross-town rival Buffalo. The four-team event will start Sept. 2, when the Golden Griffins (0-3) play at Buffalo (2-1). Canisius will also host non-league matches at the Koessler Athletic Center against Dartmouth (0-0) on Friday and Sunday and UMBC (2-0) on Saturday.

What You Need to Know:
• The Golden Griffins opened the 2026 season by participating in the YSU Invitational, presented by Mercy Health.
• Junior Emma Isroff earned YSU Invitational All-Tournament honors after she led the team with 2.82 kills per set. In the Griffs' 3-2 loss to Mercyhurst Aug. 28, Isroff put down a team-high 18 kills.
• Senior libero Brenda Reynaga leads the Griffs and ranks fourth in the Metro Conference with her 4.00 digs per set average after the first weekend of the season.
• Freshman setter Kenslie Warmbrodt was good for 4.82 assists per set in her first three college matches, and she also recorded a team-high five service aces.
• Buffalo opened the 2026 season with a 2-1 record after playing three matches at the Billiken Invitational in St. Louis, Mo., last week. The Bulls' roster features five international players, the most for any team in the Mid-American Conference.
• Wednesday's match at Buffalo will be the 70th in series history, and the first since 2022. Canisius and Buffalo first met in volleyball during the 1975 campaign.
• Dartmouth will open its 2026 season on Friday at the Koessler Athletic Center. Last season, the Big Green went 7-17 overall and 4-10 in Ivy League play.
• Canisius' match against UMBC on Saturday will be the first in program history. UMBC is 2-0 after scoring wins over UTRGV and West Virginia last week in Morgantown, W.Va. UMBC won the 2025 America East Volleyball championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season.

UP NEXT
Canisius will continue non-conference play on Sept. 13, when the Blue and Gold travels to meet Syracuse in a neutral-site contest. The matchup between the Griffs and the Orange will be played at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, N.Y., and is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
