Lanni Lauded as Metro Conference Rookie of the Week

Canisius freshman forward Romane Lanni has been named the Metro Conference Women's Soccer Rookie of the Week, league officials announced on Monday.

A native of Prevost, Quebec, Lanni scored the game-winning goal and added an assist in the Golden Griffins' 2-1 victory at in-state foe Colgate on Aug. 27.

Lanni picked up her first collegiate assist in the 26th minute as she played a ball to open space that allowed junior Azaria Fagan to get behind the Raiders defense before scoring her second goal in as many games to give Canisius the lead.

Lanni doubled the Griffs' cushion just 45 seconds later Fagan's opening tally, collecting a loose ball at the top of the box before sliding it under the diving Colgate keeper for the eventual game-winning goal.

Through four games, Lanni leads the Griffs in scoring with five points (2g-1a). Both of her goals this season have been game winners, putting her in a four-way tie for second in the Metro in that category.

Canisius (3-1) returns to action Wednesday when it squares off against crosstown rival Buffalo in a non-conference matchup.

Start time for the contest between the Griffs and Bulls is slated for 7 p.m. at Broadview Stadium in Amherst.
