Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Defeats Colgate in Non-Conference Clash

Canisius scored twice in a 45-second span midway through the first half to break open a scoreless contest and defeat Colgate, 2-1, in collegiate women's soccer action Thursday at Beyer-Small '76 Field in Hamilton, N.Y.
 
Junior Azaria Fagan and freshman Romane Lanni both scored in the 26th minute to pace the Golden Griffins (3-1-0) attack. Freshman keeper Alexa Turmel made the first-half outburst stand as she recorded a season-high seven saves to earn the victory.
 
Ava McCloskey accounted for the lone goal for the Raiders (1-3-0). Ella Poppinga posted two saves between the pipes for the home team.  
 
Fagan began the game-changing sequence at the 25:12 mark of the contest as she collected a pass from Lanni on the left side and raced down field before firing a shot past Poppinga and into the lower right-hand corner of the net to give the Griffs the lead.

Lanni doubled the Griffs advantage just moments later as she picked up a loose ball at the top of the box and placed it under a charging Poppinga to make it a 2-0 contest.  

McCloskey cut the Canisius advantage in half in the 76th minute, depositing the ball into the Griffs cage from the top of the box after Turmel punched a cross off the foot of Brooke Bodamer out of danger.
 
Turmel and Canisius kept the Raiders from netting the equalizer as they limited Colgate to just one shot over the remainder of regulation to secure the one-goal victory.
 
GAME NOTES
• Canisius picked up its second ever win against Colgate and its first against the Raiders since the 2010 campaign. The victory was also the first for the Griffs in seven visits to Hamilton.
• Colgate outshot Canisius by a 22-6 margin in the contest, highlighted by an 11-2 advantage in the first half.
• The Raiders also attempted all eight corner kicks awarded in the contest, with five coming during the second half.
• With her first-half tally, Fagan has scored in consecutive games for the second time in her career. She notched goals in three straight games from Oct. 25-Nov. 2, 2025.
• Lanni and Fagan paced the Griffs with two shots each as Canisius was held to single-digit shots in a game for the first time this season.
• Turmel was credited with the secondary assist on Fagan's goal, her first collegiate point.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius wraps up its non-conference slate with a matchup against crosstown rival Buffalo.
 
Kickoff for the contest between the Griffs and Bulls is slated for 7 p.m. at Broadview Stadium on UB's campus.
