Fagan’s Late Strike Powers Women’s Soccer Past St. Bonaventure

Junior Azaria Fagan scored in the 87th minute to break a scoreless tie and lift Canisius to a 1-0 victory over Little Three rival St. Bonaventure in collegiate women's soccer action at the Marra Athletics Complex in Olean, N.Y.
 
Fagan's game-winning goal was all the support that freshman keeper Alexa Turmel and the Golden Griffins (2-1-0) needed as she made three saves to record her second shutout of the young season.  
 
Juliana Castellano recorded six saves in goal for the host Bonnies (1-2-0).
 
With the score tied at 0-0 and less than five minutes to play in regulation, junior Mya Jones played a through ball down the right side to Fagan, who ran onto the ball before putting a shot past Castellano and inside the left post to give the Griffs the lead.
 
St. Bonaventure looked to pull level a little more than a minute after Fagan's go-ahead tally, but Emily Neenan's shot attempt from just outside the box went right of the goal, allowing the Griffs to hold for the one-goal victory.
 
GAME NOTES
• With Sunday's victory, Canisius extended its unbeaten streak against St. Bonaventure to 10 games (6-0-4) dating back to the 2015 season.
• Canisius outshot St. Bonaventure by a 16-6 margin for the contest, highlighted by an 11-1 margin in the second half.
• The Griffs held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks taken, including a 5-2 margin in the first half.
• Fagan's game-winning goal was the fifth of her seven career goals to be a game winner.
• Jones' assist was her first of the season and the third of her career.
• Turmel picked up her second shutout of the campaign with her three-save shutout.
• Six players – Turmel, Fagan, seniors Elizabeth Cavanaugh and Mary Molloy, junior Meagan Joerger, sophomore Emilia Nuttall – played the full 90 minutes.   
 
UP NEXT
Canisius travels to in-state foe Colgate Aug. 27 for a non-conference contest.
 
Kickoff for the matchup between the Griffs and Raiders is slated for 5 p.m. at Beyer-Small '76 Field in Hamilton, N.Y.
