Turmel Tabbed Metro Conference Defensive Player of the Week

Canisius women's soccer freshman goalkeeper Alexa Turmel was named the Metro Conference's Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, league officials announced on Monday.

A native of Levis, Quebec, Turmel stopped all three shots she faced in her collegiate debut as she helped guide the Golden Griffins to a season-opening victory over Le Moyne at the Demske Sports Complex on Aug. 13.

Turmel stopped two shots in the first half and made one save in the second to give Canisius its second season-opening shutout in the last three seasons.

Canisius (1-0) returns to action Thursday when it welcomes regional rival Robert Morris to the Demske Sports Complex. Kickoff for the non-conference matchup between the Griffs and Colonials is slated for 1 p.m.
