Women’s Soccer Opens Campaign with Shutout of Le Moyne

Canisius scored once in each half to post a 2-0 victory over Le Moyne in collegiate women's soccer action Thursday at the Demske Sports Complex.

In the season opener for both programs, the Golden Griffins used a first-half tally from freshman Romane Lanni and an own goal in the second half to secure the victory over the visiting Dolphins.

Lanni opened the scoring in the 39th minute as she used a pass from sophomore defender Emilia Nuttall to get behind the Le Moyne defense before slotting the ball past Dolphins keeper Mikayla McPheron for her first collegiate tally.

Canisius doubled its lead in the 80th minute with an own goal as junior Ava Pickard's ball into the box was deflected into the Le Moyne cage by a Dolphins defender.

That would be all the support that freshman keeper Alexa Turmel would need as she turned aside all three shots faced to earn the shutout in her collegiate debut. McPheron ended the game with five stops between the pipes for Le Moyne.
