Buteau Tabbed Canisius Male Rookie of the Year

Canisius hockey defenseman FJ Buteau has been selected as the 2025-26 Canisius Male Rookie of the Year, athletic department officials announced on Friday.

Buteau was selected in a vote conducted on GoGriffs.com. The other finalists were Henrique Dias (men's soccer), Jaxyn Mahoney (men's cross country/track) and Justin Relosky (men's lacrosse).

A native of Montreal, Buteau garnered All-Atlantic Hockey Association Rookie Team distinction after appearing in 31 games and leading all Golden Griffins defenseman in scoring with 17 points on five goals and 12 assists.

Named AHA Defenseman of the Month for January, Buteau recorded seven points (2g-5a) in seven games played during the first month of the calendar year, helping guide the squad to a 5-2 record in those contests.

The rearguard ended the 2025-26 campaign ranked 12th nationally among freshman defenseman in scoring. Buteau's five goals were tied for the eighth most among first-year blueliners in the NCAA while his 12 assists represented the 12th-highest total for rookie defensemen.

The nominees for the 2025-26 Canisius Female Rookie of the Year will be unveiled on June 8.
