Canisius Boasts Another Solid Semester in the Classroom

Canisius student-athletes enjoyed another successful semester in the classroom as they posted a cumulative grade point average of 3.49 for the recently completed fall semester, it was announced on Wednesday.

All 21 of the Golden Griffins' varsity intercollegiate athletic programs fashioned a team cumulative grade point average of 3.10 or higher, with 18 squads exceeding a 3.30 cumulative GPA.

The fall semester saw a total of 69 student-athletes earn a perfect 4.0 grade point average. Those 69 student-athletes highlighted a group of 363 student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher, representing 88% of the University's total student-athlete population.

Volleyball registered a department-best 3.73 cumulative grade point average for the just-completed semester. Hockey finished just behind volleyball with a 3.67 cumulative GPA, while women's soccer was third (3.65).

Men's cross country/track, women's cross country/track and women's lacrosse finished with identical 3.60 cumulative GPA's to place fourth while women's swimming and diving (3.58), softball (3.57), men's swimming and diving (3.56) gave the department a total of nine programs with a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or greater.

"The success of our student-athletes in the classroom and their sport is no coincidence – those achievements go hand in hand," Canisius University Vice president and Director of Athletics Bill Maher said.

"This level of academic achievement reflects the work in the classroom and labs and is made possible by the outstanding support and dedication from our faculty, coaches and academic services staff.  Our student-athletes have created a culture where academic achievement is the standard and they have once again met that standard!"

In May the NCAA released the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) statistics, which indicated that all Canisius varsity programs are in good standing while 12 teams posted perfect single-year scores.

In all, 19 of Canisius' 20 varsity intercollegiate athletic teams turned in a multi-year APR of 970 or better out of a possible 1,000 points. The latest NCAA APR report was based on NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rate (APR) data submitted by the institution for the 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24 and 2024-25 academic years.

The 12 teams that posted perfect APR scores for 2024-25 are baseball, women's basketball, golf, hockey, men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse, rowing, softball, women's soccer, men's swimming and diving, women's swimming and diving and volleyball.

Three Canisius programs also registered perfect multiyear APR scores, led by volleyball, who posted a perfect APR score for the fifth straight season and 11th time in the program history. Hockey also recorded a perfect multiyear APR for the fifth straight campaign and sixth time in program history (2014-15). Women's lacrosse rounded out the registered its second perfect multi-year APR score and first since the 2918-19 season.
