Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Battles Back to Earn Split at Robert Morris

The Canisius softball team fought back from a tough extra-inning loss to record a 10-5 win and earn a split in a non-league doubleheader at Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa., Tuesday evening.

In the first game, Canisius led 9-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning before eventually falling to the host Colonials, 11-10 in eight innings. In the nightcap, the Golden Griffins banged out 12 hits en route to the victory, a win which snapped the Blue and Gold's five-game losing skid.

Canisius moved its record to 14-27 with a split at Robert Morris, while the Colonials saw their record move to 24-16 on the season.

GAME RECAP
Canisius junior Alyssa Onyeagwa went 3-for-4 and was a home run shy of hitting for the cycle, but a late rally by Robert Morris lifted the host Colonials to the 11-10 victory in eight innings.

Canisius led 9-1 with two outs in the home half of the fifth before Robert Morris scored three times to make the score 9-4 and extend the game into the sixth inning. In the seventh, the Colonials scored five runs on six hits and took advantage of a Canisius fielding error to knot the game at 9-9. In the eighth inning, Onyeagwa, who started the inning on second base thanks to the international tie-breaking rule, scored on a wild pitch to put the Blue and Gold back in the lead at 10-9. However, in the home-half of the eighth, Robert Morris' Eloise Facher's double with one out in the frame drove in a pair and gave the home team the walk-off win.

Onyeagwa had a double, a triple and scored three times in the game one victory, as Canisius recorded 11 hits in the losing cause. Junior Ella Johel and senior Sofia Escoto both went 2-for-4 at the plate, and both players hit homers for the Griffs. Escoto ended the first game with four RBI and also scored a run as well.

GAME TWO RECAP
The second game of the day followed the same wild script as the first contest, as the teams combined to score seven runs in the first inning, as Robert Morris led Canisius 4-3 heading into the second. Canisius took the lead for good in the second by scoring three times, highlighted by an RBI-single off the bat of freshman Talia Yermian that drove in a pair.

The Griffs added three insurance runs in the fourth, and both Onyeagwa and senior Bailey Alatorre drove in runs with sacrifice fly-ball outs. Junior Olivia Manchester moved her record to 5-6 on the year in the circle after she went the distance and allowed five runs, four earned, on 11 hits to go with five strikeouts and two walks.

Yermian went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBI and a run scored in the nightcap victory, while Alatorre went 1-for-2 with a double, three runs batted in and a run scored. Escoto and Johel each had two hits and scored twice for the Blue and Gold, while sophomore Grace Walker finished the day by going 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
