Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Races Past Mercyhurst

Four players recorded hat tricks to power Canisius to a 22-5 victory over Mercyhurst in collegiate women's lacrosse action Thursday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins snapped a two-game losing skid and improved to 5-2 overall. The Lakers, meanwhile, remained winless on the season as they fell to 0-4 with the loss.

Juniors Maddie Fitzgerald and Lauren Matyka, sophomore Leah Pfeiffer and freshman Ella Forcucci made up the quartet of Griffs that scored three times while sophomore Makenna Crouse and freshman Laine Nissen added two goals each. Freshman Brooklyn Sverdrup won a program-record 17 draws as Canisius won the battle in the circle by 21-7 margin. Junior Olivia Licardi earned the win in net, recording six saves on nine shots.

For Mercyhurst, Whitley Easton scored a game-high four goals to lead the Lakers, who were outshot by a 27-8 margin for the contest. Maggie Allen was credited with the loss after allowing 17 goals on 22 shots.

With the score tied at 2-2, a goal from Fitzgerald at the 3:33 mark of the first quarter sparked an 18-goal run that spanned nearly 29 minutes and gave the Griffs a commanding 20-2 advantage with just 5:33 to play in the third. A total of 10 different players found the back of the net during the game-changing stretch, highlighted by hat tricks from Fitzgerald, Pfeiffer and Forcucci.

Mercyhurst scored three of the final five goals of the contest to determine the 17-goal margin.
