Women's Lacrosse Downs Dolphins

Four players turned multiple-goal performances to propel Canisius to a 12-7 victory over Le Moyne in collegiate women's lacrosse action Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins improved to 6-2 overall with its second consecutive win to round out non-conference play. The Dolphins saw their three-game winning streak snapped as they fell to 5-2 overall.

HEAD COACH RUSSELL ALLEN POST-GAME PRESS CONFERENCE

Juniors Maggie Tifft, Lauren Matyka, Maddie Fitzgerald and Ashlyn Dhandwar all finished with two goals each in the victory. Junior Harper Weatherdon was credited with a career-high five caused turnovers as Canisius forced Le Moyne to give up the ball 27 times while senior Briuanna D'Andrade scooped up a career-best seven ground balls. Graduate student Isabel Gautreaux entered the game in the second half and made four saves on six shots to earn her second win of the season.

Olivia Lockwood, Francesca Tortora and Maddi Barney finished with two goals each for Le Moyne. Julia Blakeslee won a game-high 10 draw controls as the Dolphins won the battle in the circle by a 14-9 margin. Goaltender Amanda Manfredi was credited with the loss after allowing 12 goals on 24 shots.

Tortora helped the Dolphins open up an early lead, finding the back of the net two times in the opening six-plus minutes of the game to give the visitors a quick 2-0 edge. Le Moyne held the Griffs scoreless until Tifft scored her ninth goal of the season at the 5:17 mark of the first, igniting a 7-1 run that spanned into the later stages of the second quarter and gave Canisius a four-goal edge. Barney netted two goals in the span of 13 seconds before the end of the frame that trimmed the Griffs lead to 7-5 at the break.

Both sides scored twice in the third quarter, leading to a 9-7 Canisius advantage heading into the final quarter of play.

Le Moyne was unable to come up with a goal in the final quarter of play as Gautreaux saved all three of the Dolphins' shots on goal. The defensive effort helped the Griffs pull away with the victory as freshman Ella Forcucci, Tifft and Matyka scored Canisius' three goals in the quarter that locked in the five-goal victory.
