Buzzer-Beater Goal Lifts Canisius Past Quinnipiac

Sophomore Makenna Crouse scored as time expired to lift Canisius to a 15-14 comeback victory over Quinnipiac in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins won their fourth consecutive game as they improved to 8-2 overall and 2-0 in conference play, meanwhile, the Bobcats fell to 5-5 overall and 0-2 in league action.

Freshman Ella Forcucci led Canisius with five goals and an assist while sophomore Katie Adams chipped in four goals throughout the afternoon. Freshman Brooklyn Sverdrup won a game-high seven draw controls as the Griffs won the battle in the circle, 18-11. Graduate student Isabel Gautreaux earned her second win of the season in net, making eight saves.

Peyton Choma, Emma Miller-Ayala, Julia Givens and Cate Bendowski all notched hat tricks for the visiting Bobcats. Choma and Bendowski both scored three goals and added two assists to each tally a team-best five points. Anna Givens picked up a game-high four ground balls and was credited with two caused turnovers.

Trailing 14-12 after Julia Givens' third goal of the game gave the Bobcats a two-goal cushion with 3:11 remaining in the contest, the Blue and Gold started their comeback moments later as they used tallies from junior Lauren Matyka and Forcucci over a 40-second span to tie the game at 14-14 with just 39 seconds remaining.

The Griffs won the ensuing draw control and raced down the field before sophomore Megan Previdi fired a pass from behind the goal to Crouse, who was able to get a bounce shot past Quinnipiac keeper Shannon Alden to lift Canisius to victory.

Prior to the Griffs late-game heroics, Quinnipiac held a 1-0 lead before Canisius responded by scoring four of the next six goals to take a 4-3 lead after one quarter of play.

Canisius notched the first two goals of the second quarter to build a 6-3 lead. The Bobcats, answered back, however, using three unanswered goals to tie the game at 6-6 just before the halftime break.

The teams continued to trade runs in the second half, with Previdi finding the back of the net with 4:20 left to go in the third quarter to cap a three-goal surge that gave Canisius an 11-9 lead. Quinnipiac answered back with a 4-1 run to take a two goal lead of its own, capped by Givens goal with just over three mintues to play in the fourth that set the stage for the Griffs' late-game comeback.
