Stags Surge Late to Sink Women's Lacrosse

Fairfield scored three goals in the final five minutes of the fourth quarter to break a 9-9 tie and lift the Stags to a 12-9 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday at Rafferty Stadium in Fairfield, Conn.

The defending MAAC champion, Fairfield improved to 8-3 overall and 3-0 in conference play with the win. The loss, meanwhile, snapped a four-game win streak for the Golden Griffins as they fell to 8-3 overall and 2-1 in league action.

The Stags were led by Tessa Caputo, who scored the lone hat trick while also tallying an assist for a game-high four points. Teammate Haley Burns turned in an all-around effort, recording two goals, two assists, three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Whitney Robinson started in net but was relieved by Kiera Furey midway through the second quarter after allowing five goals on nine shots. Furey turned away three shots as she earned the victory.


Sophomore Megan Previdi led Canisius with a team-high three points, scoring two goals and dishing out an assist. Freshman Ella Forcucci found the back of the net twice, turning in the ninth multi-point game of her career. Senior Briuanna D'Andrade scooped up a game-high three ground balls. Graduate student Isabel Gautreaux made eight saves on 16 shots and was credited with two caused turnovers.

With the score tied 9-9 late in the fourth quarter, Mary Henry put the Stags back in front with 4:55 remaining before Charlotte Loughlin added an insurance marker less than two minutes later to give Fairfield an 11-9 edge with 3:15 on the clock. 

Caputo completed her hat trick with with less than two minutes on the clock, putting the game out of reach and securing the three-goal victory for Fairfield. 


Earlier in the contest, sophomore Ashlyn Dhandwar opened the scoring less than two minutes into the game, capitalizing on a player-up opportunity. Forcucci followed suit, finding the back of the net at the 6:30 mark of the opening quarter to give the Blue and Gold an early two-goal lead.

After both sides traded goals, Previdi netted her second goal of the afternoon at the 11:00 mark of the second quarter which saw Canisius pull out to a 5-2 advantage, its largest of the game.

Fairfield stormed back with three straight goals in a five minute span to tie the game, only to see senior Meg Hiltz break the deadlock with 1:36 remaining in the second quarter, giving Canisius a 6-5 lead at the break.

Fairfield tied up the game once again less than two minutes into the second half. After the Griffs temporarily regained the lead on a free-position goal from sophomore Makenna Crouse, the Stags answered back, rattling three straight goals to turn the tides and take a 9-7 lead over Canisius with 13:46 left to play in the fourth quarter.

Canisius was able to form another response, scoring the next two goals to bring the game back level at 9-9, providing the setting for the Stags late-game surge. 

GAME NOTES
• Saturday's game was the 36th all-time meeting between the two programs.
• Canisius won the ground ball battle, 13-12.
• D'Andrade turned in her third game of the season with multiple ground balls and 12th of her career.
• Canisius went 4-for-6 off free-position attempts.

UP NEXT
Canisius returns to Buffalo Wednesday for a pivotal midweek contest with cross-town rival Niagara. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Demske Sports Complex and the contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
