Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

First-Quarter Surge Sparks Hobart Past Men’s Lacrosse

Hobart used a six-goal first quarter to take control of the contest as it recorded a 13-8 victory over Canisius in intercollegiate men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Thomas B. Poole '61 and Family Sports Dome in Geneva, N.Y.

In the season-opening contest for both programs, Daniel Cano recorded a first-quarter hat trick and added an assist to lead the Statesmen. Connor DiTomasso finished with two goals and two assists while David Peterkin chipped in a goal and two assists. Michael Johnson stopped 14 shots in his collegiate debut between the pipes. Seamus Schofield went 10-of-15 at the "X" and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls.

Sophomore Peter Biglin recorded a hat trick to pace the Golden Griffins attack. Graduate TJ Buono pitched in two goals and an assist while junior Quinn Huber tallied two goals in his return to the lineup after missing the entire 2025 campaign due to injury. Graduate goalie Tommy Kunz finished with eight saves.

Cano tallied three of the Statesmen's first four goals of the game as Hobart tallied the final four goals of the opening frame to break open a one-goal game and grab a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The teams traded goals over the next 20 plus minutes of play before Hobart used a goal from Bryce Johnson with just under six minutes to play in the third quarter to spark a three-goal surge that give Hobart its largest lead of the contest, 13-5, at the end of the frame.

Canisius tallied all three goals scored in the fourth quarter to determine the five-goal final margin.

POSTGAME COMMENTS
"We improved throughout the course of the 60 minutes today. I wish we had a better start to the game. Just some mistakes here and there that they were able to capitalize on and allowed them to build that early lead. But looking at what we've been able to do with some limitations practice wise because of these temperatures, there were some good things and obviously, some stuff that we've got to improve upon as we move forward.

"The first quarter was a little bit of trial by fire and guys stepping into roles that maybe they haven't been in before and obviously, we've got guys getting opportunities in their first collegiate game as well. So, we've just got to be able to quickly take this lesson of playing against somebody else when it counts and use it to our advantage to learn and improve over the course of the next 10 days before we play again.

"Defensively, it was nice to see Ben McGrath have some success at the LSM position. He's had a tremendous fall and early part to practice here and seems to have found his groove. It was exciting to see him have some success on the field today. We got a first collegiate goal from Dane Kinney today as well. He's continuing to evolve and find a way to use his size, speed and strength the first collegiate goal was exciting for him to get. We also welcomed back Quinn Huber today after being off for a year and for him to get two goals was exciting. We're just happy for him to have a little bit of that success after that long layoff."
