Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Quinnipiac Proves To Be Too Much for Men’s Basketball

Playing its fourth game in seven days, the Canisius men's basketball team ran out of steam in a 75-60 road loss to Quinnipiac in MAAC men's basketball action Thursday night at M&T Bank Arena in Hamden, Conn.

The win improved Quinnipiac to 16-9 overall and 9-5 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 8-17 overall and 3-11 in conference action with their ninth-straight loss.

Canisius junior Bryan Ndjonga led all scorers with a game-high 19 points to go with five rebounds, a blocked shot and an assist. Sophomore Evan van der Plas and freshman Brendan Oliver each had nine points off the bench and senior Kimg Ijeoma added seven points and a season-high three blocks to the losing cause.

Four Quinnipiac players scored in double-figures in the victory, led by Jaden Zimmerman, who posted a team-high 15 points to go with seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. Grant Randall had 14 points after knocking down four 3-pointers and MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Amaarri Monroe chipped in 14 points, seven boards and two assists. For the game, Quinnipiac shot 40.7 percent from the floor, but 10 of the Bobcats' 22 goals came from behind the 3-point arc. Quinnipiac also made 21-of-29 (72.4 percent) from the free-throw line and outrebounded the Griffs 36-30.

Canisius trailed 36-23 with 4:21 left in the first half before a 3-pointer from graduate student Max Jusianiec and a free-throw by Ndjonga trimmed the Quinnipiac advantage to nine at 36-27 with 3:05 remaining before halftime. Four-straight points from the Bobcats extended their lead back to 13 points, but a trey by van der Plas with 15.4 seconds left in the opening frame sent the Griffs into the locker room down 41-31 at intermission.

A one-handed jam by Ndjonga with 18:04 left in regulation time got Canisius within nine at 43-34, but that would be as close as the Griffs would get the rest of the way. From there, Quinnipiac pulled away thanks to a 16-1 run over the contest's next 7:54, which made the score 59-35 with 9:51 showing on the game clock.

Canisius ended the night by shooting 32.1 percent from the floor, 45.0 percent from 3-point land and 65.2 percent from the free-throw line. Junior Mike Evbagharu matched a career-high with six assists while graduate student Myles Wilmoth added a team-best six rebounds.
