Canisius jumped out to an early 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Collins and junior Quinn Huber before consecutive tallies from Johnson ignited a 9-2 spurt for the Vikings that lasted nearly 30 minutes and gave CSU a five-goal cushion early in the third quarter. Whalen tallied all three of his goals during the run while Hickey, Johnson, and McDonald pitched in two goals apiece.

The Griffs looked to get back into the contest, closing the third quarter with a 3-1 spurt to make it a 10-7 game heading into the fourth.

McDonald restored CSU's four-goal lead with his third goal of the game to open the four-quarter scoring before the teams went nearly 11 minutes without a goal. The teams exchanged tallies over the final 85 seconds of regulation to determine the 13-9 final score.
