Late Surge Lifts Men’s Lacrosse Past Le Moyne

Canisius scored twice in a 76-second span late in the fourth quarter to erase a one-goal deficit and defeat Le Moyne, 8-7, in collegiate men's lacrosse action Tuesday at Sahlen's Sports Park in Elma, N.Y.
 
Redshirt sophomore Quinn Huber notched the equalizer with 2:09 to play in regulation and chipped in two assists to lead the Golden Griffins (1-3) attack. Sophomore Carson Christy recorded the game-winner with 52 seconds to play, one of his two goals on the day for the second-year midfielder.
 
Sophomore Peter Biglin pitched in a goal and an assist while freshman Justin Relosky dished out two assists.
 
Senior face-off specialist Micah Hanson went 13-of-18 on faceoffs and scooped up a game-best nine ground balls. Redshirt sophomore Brady Robinson and redshirt junior Mark Matott split goaltending duties, with each finishing with three saves.
 
Thomas Berry recorded a hat trick for the Dolphins (0-4). Nathan Hoban pitched in two goals and an assist while Lucas Winger recorded 13 saves between the pipes for the visitors.
 
Trailing 8-7 in the later stages of the fourth quarter, Huber brought Canisius level with an even-strength tally.
 
The Dolphins won the ensuing faceoff, but the the Griffs were able to force a turnover, setting the stage for Christy, who caught the feed from Biglin 10 yards out and bounced one past Winger for the go-ahead marker with less than one minute remaining.
 
Hanson put the game away as he won the final faceoff of the game, allowing Canisius to run out the clock and secure the one-goal victory.
 
Earlier in the contest, Le Moyne opened the scoring with a pair of man-up tallies and an even strength marker to secure an early 3-0 cushion.
 
Junior Lowen Martin got the Griffs on the board midway through the opening frame, but Hoban countered for the Dolphins to give them a 4-1 advantage after one.
 
The Griffs controlled play for the majority of the second quarter, scoring the first three goals of the frame to knot the score at 4-4. Le Moyne was able to regain momentum heading into the locker room as Berry completed his hat trick to push the Dolphins back in front, 5-4.
 
The teams exchanged goals over the opening 17 minutes of the second half, with Zach Cartmill giving Le Moyne a 7-6 lead less than two minutes into the fourth, providing the scene for the Griffs late-game comeback.
 
POSTGAME COMMENTS

GAME NOTES
• Canisius outshot Le Moyne by a 30-22 margin for the contest, highlighted by a combined 18-8 edge during the second and fourth quarters.
• The Dolphins were 2-for-4 in man-up situations while Canisius was 1-for-2 with the extra attacker.
• Redshirt sophomore Ben McGrath posted a career-high four caused turnovers and added five ground balls during the contest.
• Redshirt sophomore Jordan Meech notched his team-leading third man-up goal of the season with his second-quarter tally on Tuesday.
• Huber's three-point performance on Tuesday represented a career high for the Carmel, Ind., native.
• Christy notched multiple goals in a game for the second time in his career with his two-goal effort on Tuesday. Both of his multiple-goal performances have come against Le Moyne.
• Hanson posted double-digit face-off wins for the fourth time this season and the 41st time in his career with his 13 face-off victories on Tuesday.
• Hanson also scooped up a season-best nine ground balls as he finished with nine-or-more ground balls in a game for the 18th time in his career.
 
UP NEXT
Canisius continues its four-game homestand Saturday with a non-conference matchup against Cleveland State.
 
Opening faceoff between the Griffs and Vikings is slated for noon at the Demske Sports Complex.
