Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Mount’s Second-Half Surge Sinks Men’s Basketball

The Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers used a 26-6 run over a 10-minute stretch that spanned both halves en route to a 68-47 win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at Knott Arena in Emmitsburg, Md.

With the win, Mount St. Mary's fourth straight, the Mountaineers improved to 14-15 overall and 10-8 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 9-20 overall and 4-14 in conference games.

Canisius junior Kahlil Singleton led all scorers with 15 points in the loss for Canisius, with nine of those points coming on the power of three 3-point field goal makes. Fellow junior Bryan Ndjonga added 13 points, while Mike Evbagharu chipped in eight points and a team-high five rebounds.

For the Mount, Arlandus Keyes scored a team-high 14 points and dished out a game-high seven assists on his Senior Day, while fellow senior Xavier Lipscomb scored 13 points in his final game at Knott Arena. After shooting just 25 percent (6-for-24) from the field and going 1-for-9 from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes, Mount St. Mary's shot 61.3 percent (19-for-31) from the floor and made six 3-pointers in the game's second half, where the Mountaineers outscored the Griffs by a 48-23 clip.

A 3-point field goal by Ndjonga with 9:04 left in the first half put Canisius up 13-12, and that basket started a 14-4 Canisius run over the contest's next 3:32 that put the Griffs up eight at 24-16 with 2:23 left before the halftime break. In that run, Ndjonga scored seven points and Singleton added five, including a put-back basket off an offensive rebound. However, that would be the Griffs' final points of the opening frame, as Mount St. Mary's closed out the first half by scoring four-straight points, capped by a put-back tip-in by Luke McEldon as the first half buzzer sounded. McEldon's bucket sent the teams in the locker room at halftime with Canisus leading 24-20.

Out of the intermission, the Mount scored 13-straight points to push its lead to 33-24 with 16:48 left in the contest. A jumper by senior King Ijeoma with 14:52 left to play cut Mount St. Mary's lead to seven at 35-28, but the Mountaineers pulled away from there, outscoring Canisius 7-0 over the next 1:29 to drive their lead to 14 points at 42-28 with 12:55 remaining. Canisius was never able to get any closer than 14 points for the remainder of the contest.
