Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women's Lacrosse Downs Eastern Michigan to Earn Third Straight Win

Sophomore Katie Adams and freshman Ella Forcucci recorded five goals apiece to lead Canisius to a 19-12 win over Eastern Michigan in collegiate women's lacrosse action Wednesday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins improved to 3-0 for the third time in the past five years with Tuesday's victory. The Eagles fell to a 3-2 overall mark with the loss, snapping a three-game winning streak with the setback.

Forcucci added two assists to tally a game-best seven points in the contest. Junior Ashlyn Dhandawar scored two goals to aid the potent Canisius attack. Sophomore Lauren Matyka scooped up a game-high three ground balls while senior teammate Briaunna D'Andrade caused a team-best four turnovers. Freshman Brooklyn Sverdrup won five draws as the Griffs bested the Eagles in draw controls by a 18-15 margin. In goal, graduate student Isabel Gautreaux stopped eight of Eastern's 20 shots on net.

Amber Alderman tallied a team-high four goals for EMU while teammate Mackenzie Blackwell scored three goals and dished out an assist. Goaltender Maddy Porter was credited with the loss, making six saves.

Canisius briefly trailed 1-0 in the contest before junior Meg Hiltz cashed in her fifth goal of the season at the 11:04 mark of the first quarter, igniting a 9-0 run that stretched more than 16 minutes of game play and gave the Griffs an eight-goal cushion with just over 10 minutes remaining until halftime.

The Eagles responded to the Canisius charge, scoring four of the five five goals of the first half to make it a 10-5 advantage for the Griffs at the break.

The teams traded goals to open the second half before a three-goal spurt from EMU pulled the Eagles within three, 12-9, midway though the frame.

Adams put the Griffs back on track, converting on a free-position attempt to ignite a 6-0 run for the Griffs that saw the attacker contribute three goals to the cause as Canisius took its largest lead of the game, 18-9, with less than 10 minutes remaining.

The Eagles ended the Griffs second-half surge by rattling off three straight scores, but the comeback was not in store as Forcucci capped off the contest with an insurance marker at the 1:59 mark to seal the seven-goal victory.
