Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Manhattan Holds Off Men’s Basketball

Manhattan guard Devin Dinkins scored nine of his 14 points in the game's final 5:05 to help lead the visiting Jaspers to a 69-65 road win over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball at the Koessler Athletic Center Sunday afternoon.

The win, Manhattan's third straight, improved the Jaspers to 12-16 overall and 8-9 in league play, while the Gold Griffins fell to 8-19 overall and 3-13 in conference action with their 11th straight loss.

Canisius junior Mike Evbagharu posted his third double-double of the year with a season-high 20 points to go with 11 rebounds in 40:00 of play. He also dished out a career-high seven assists and was credited with a steal in the losing effort. Freshman Javante Edwards scored 17 points for the Blue and Gold, while junior Kahlil Singleton added 11 points. For the game, Canisius shot 40.4 percent from the field and 93.3 percent (14-of-15) from the free-throw line, but the Griffs went just 5-for-22 from behind the arc and turned the ball over nine times, which Manhattan converted into 18 points.

Dinkins was one of three Manhattan players to record double-figures in the scoring column in the win. Jaden Winston scored a team-high 18 points to go with three rebounds, three assists and three steals, while Terrance Jones added 12 points and five boards to the winning cause. Manhattan shot 44.4 percent from the field, 43.8 percent (7-for-16) from 3-point land and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the free-throw line in the game, but Jaspers made eight of those free-throws in the contest's closing 5:05.

A 3-pointer by Winston from the top of the key with 17:51 left to play in the game put Manhattan up 43-27. From there, the Griffs outscored the Jaspers 27-5 over the game's next 9:04 to take the lead 54-48 with 8:30 remaining in regulation time. In that scoring surge, Evbagharu and Edwards combined to score 18 of the Griffs' 27 points. Canisius took its first lead since the opening minutes of the game at 50-48 with 9:26 left thanks to a traditional three-point play by Edwards, and moments later, the Blue and Gold took their largest lead of the day at 54-48, as Singleton knocked down two free-throws following a technical foul against Manhattan's head coach with 8:30 left.

With Canisius leading 58-53 with 6:12 left to play, Manhattan mounted its comeback charge by scoring the game's next 10 points to turn a five-point deficit into a 63-58 lead with 1:12 remaining. In the game's final minute, Dinkins went 4-for-6 from the free-throw line to secure the victory.

Manhattan put Canisius in a 17-point first-half hole with a 12-0 run over the span of 3:01 in the opening stanza, but the Griffs were able to whittle that lead down to 37-27 at the halftime break after freshman Chris Kumu scored the Blue and Gold's final nine points before halftime. Kumu also had four rebounds and a steal, as he was the only Canisius reserve to contribute any points in the game.
