Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Scores Two Wins on Saturday

The Canisius softball team is off to its best four-game start since the 2023 campaign after the Golden Griffins scored a pair of wins on Saturday at the 2026 Chattanooga Challenge in Chattanooga, Tenn. In the first game of the day, Canisius posted a 3-2 win over Bellarmine before scoring a 5-1 victory over the host Chattanooga Mocs in the nightcap.

With the forecast of heavy rain in the Chattanooga area for Sunday, the Griffs' final game of the weekend has been cancelled.

GAME ONE RECAP
With the game tied 2-2 in the top-half of the sixth, freshman Talia Yermian's RBI-single through the right side of the infield allowed junior Ella Johel to score the go-ahead run from second base, as the Griffs defeated Bellarmine, 3-2. The loss dropped Bellarmine to 1-6 on the season.

The Griffs trailed the Knights 1-0 until the top of the fourth, where the Blue and Gold knotted the game at 1-1 thanks to an RBI-groundout by junior Alyssa Onyeagwa. Moments later, Yermian reached on a fielder's choice and senior Bailey Alatorre scored on the play, putting Canisius up 2-1.

In the fifth, Bellarmine tied the game at 2-2 with a squeeze-play bunt, but Canisus took the lead back for good in the sixth after Yermian sliced one through the right side of the infield with two down, allowing Johel to score. In the bottom of the sixth, the Knights had the bases loaded with two outs, but freshman Brooke Bodewes ended the threat with a groundout to first base.

Bodewes earned her first career win in the circle after she came on in relief of starter Mikaila Obenrader. Bodewes threw three scoreless innings of relief, where she allowed four hits and a walk.

Johel led the way for the Griffs, as she went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the victory for Canisius. Senior Sofia Escoto had a double in the win for the Griffs, which collected seven hits as a team.

GAME TWO RECAP
The Griffs scored three times in the first and added two more runs in the third, and that was more than enough for Olivia Manchester, as the junior tossed a three-hitter and struck out four in a 5-1 victory for Canisius over Chattanooga.

Canisius struck first in the top half of the first after Escoto ripped a three-run homer to right with two down in the frame to give the Blue and Gold a 3-0 advantage. In the third, Canisius stretched its cushion to 5-0, with Escoto driving in her fourth RBI of the contest on a groundout to short, which allowed Alatorre to score from third base. The Mocs scored their only run, an unearned run, in the fourth on a Canisius throwing error.

Manchester improved to 2-0 on the young season in the circle with the complete-game, three-hitter. She allowed just three base runners reach second base, and she ended the game by retiring 10 of the last 11 batters she faced after Chattanooga scored its lone run.

Canisius banged out six hits in the game two victory, with junior Mia Martin having a multi-hit game. She also recorded a stolen base.
