Mahoney Picks Up Win to Pace Indoor Track at the SPIRE Collegiate Indoor Games

Freshman Jaxyn Mahoney continued his strong indoor season, picking up another first-place finish, as the Golden Griffins competed in the SPIRE Institute Collegiate Indoor Games in Geneva, Ohio on Saturday.

On the men's side, Canisius swept the podium in the 800-meter run. Mahoney led the way with a first-place finish in 1:54.63, followed by senior Brody Jones in second (1:55.90) and freshman Jack Nesbit in third (1:56.05). Sophomore Ryan Giglia rounded out the top-five for the Griffs, placing fifth with a time of 1:56.30.

The men's mile run saw two Griffs place in the top-10, as sophomore Nathaniel Fisher finished in fifth with a time of 4:16.78 and fellow sophomore Fenway Breckels finished behind him in ninth, crossing the line in 4:23.92.

Sophomore Adam Kozman also picked up a top-10 finish in the 3000-meter, placing sixth with a time of 9:07.43. The men's team finished off the day with a group consisting of Jones, senior Braden Tent, and sophomores Ryan Giglia and Noah Covert, who finished in second in the 4x400 relay.

On the women's side, freshman Charlotte Keenan turned in another strong performance in the 400-meter with a fourth-place finish in 1:00.68. Keenan followed that up with a 10th-place finish in the 60-meter run with a time of 8.22.

Two Griffs placed in the top-20 of the women's mile run as freshman Julia Gullo finished in 16th, crossing the line in 5:44.16. Just behind her was junior Brooke Podgorski in 17th with a time of 5:44.30.

Junior Peyton Calkins added to the strong day from the Golden Griffins, registering her first top-three finish of the indoor season in the 3000-meter in 11:00.21.

The Canisius indoor track team will compete in the postseason at the MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, held at the Nike Track & Field Center at The Armory in New York, N.Y., on Feb. 21-22.
