Siena Scores Season Sweep of Men’s Basketball

Siena used a 27-4 scoring run over 9:16 midway through the first half and never looked back, as the visiting Saints posted a 78-63 victory over Canisius in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center.

The win, Siena's fourth straight, improved the Saints to 16-7 overall and 9-3 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 8-15 overall and 3-9 in league action with their seventh-straight loss.

Four Siena players scored in double-figures in the win, led by guard Justice Shoats, who posted a game-high 22 points, which included Siena's first nine points of the game in the opening 5:42. Francis Folefac and Isaiah Henderson each had 14 points, while Gavin Doty chipped in 12 points, six rebounds and four assists to the winning cause for Siena, which shot 54.9 percent from the field, made 7-of-18 3-pointers and knocked down 15-of-22 chances from the free-throw line.

For Canisius, freshman guard Javante Edwards scored a season-high 18 points, powered by a 6-for-9 performance from behind the 3-point arc. Edwards was also credited with four assists on the day. Juniors Bryan Ndjonga and Kahlil Singleton each scored 11 points, while fellow junior Mike Evbagharu added nine points, a game-high 10 rebounds, five assists and two steals. For the game, the Blue and Gold out-rebounded Siena 33-29, with 17 of those rebounds coming off the offensive backboard, however, Canisius only scored 10 second-chance points in the game.

A 3-pointer by sophomore Evan van der Plas with 11:25 left before the halftime break put Canisius up six at 19-13. From there, Siena took over, using that 27-4 scoring push to take control of the game for good. In the scoring surge, which was kick-started by a 3-pointer from reserve guard Christian Jones, Folefac and Henderson combined to account for 15 of Siena's points, while Shoats added nine more, as the Saints took their largest lead of the opening half at 40-24 with 1:46 left before halftime.

Canisius trailed 40-29 at halftime, and went down by as many as 14 points in the opening moments of the second half, but back-to-back 3-pointers from Singleton and Edwards trimmed the Saints' cushion to 48-39 with 14:10 left to play. After a dunk by Folefac pushed Siena's lead back to double-digits, Ndjonga hit a jumper from just outside the paint to once again get the Griffs within nine, this time at 50-41. But that was as close as the Griffs would get the rest of the day, as Siena answered with five-straight points in the span of 39 seconds to seal the victory.
