Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Stymied by Siena

Siena used a pair of first-half goals and a three-save shutout from Cate Burns to record a 2-0 victory over Canisius in Metro Conference women's soccer action Wednesday at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.

Maya Costa and Catherine Rogers both found the back of the net during the first half for the Saints (8-3-1, 4-2-0 Metro). That was all support Burns needed as she recorded her league-leading eighth shutout of the season.

Freshman keeper Alexa Turmel was credited with one save in goal for the Golden Griffins (5-6-0, 2-4-0 Metro).

Costa opened the scoring in the 20th minute as she collected a cross from Anna Swyers in the middle of the box before playing a shot into the lower left-hand corner of the net to give the Saints the lead.

Rogers doubled the Siena advantage in the 33rd minute when she ran onto a through ball from Briana Neary before chipping it over a charging Turmel to make it a 2-0 contest.

Canisius' best chance to get on the board came in the 65th minute when Burns was able to corral a free kick attempt off the foot of senior Jessica Whitaker to keep the Griffs off the board.
