Jones Paces Indoor Track at the SPIRE Institute Midwest Open

Highlighted by a first-place finish in the one-mile run, senior Brody Jones paced Canisius as the men's and women's indoor track teams continued their 2026 season at the SPIRE Institute Midwest Open Saturday in Geneva, Ohio.

Jones' victory in the one-mile run punctuated a race that saw four different Golden Griffins place in the top ten, highlighted by a sweep of all three podium spots. Jones claimed first place with a time of 4:15.80, while fellow sophomore Nathaniel Fisher finished close behind in second at 4:17.65. Senior Kyle Urban rounded out the top three (4:20.97) and sophomore Fenway Breckels placed seventh, posting a time of 4:27.26.

In the men's 800-meter run, three Griffs finished in the top five. Freshman Jaxyn Mahoney earned a second-place finish in 1:56.00, followed by Jones in third (1:56.80) and freshman Jack Nesbit in fifth (1:56.87).

The men also captured a third-place finish in the 4x400m relay, as Nesbit, Mahoney, and seniors Braden Tent and Joe Pivarunas combined for a time of 3:33.07.

On the women's side, sophomore Clara Sundberg led the way with a fourth-place finish in the 800-meter run, clocking a time of 2:21.83. Fellow sophomore Ella Krumpek followed with an 11th-place finish in the one-mile run at 5:32.51, while freshman Charlotte Keenan placed 13th in the 400m dash, finishing in 1:01.18.

Canisius returns to action on Jan. 31 as the team travels to Youngstown, Ohio to compete at the YSU Mid Major Invitational, hosted by Youngstown State.
