Women’s Soccer Edges Manhattan to Open League Play

Canisius scored twice in a 3:13 span midway through the first half to break open a scoreless contest and defeat Manhattan, 2-1, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.

Sophomore Meghan Joerger and senior Jessica Whitaker scored for the Golden Griffins (1-4-0, 1-0-0 MAAC). Freshman keeper Chloe Tseros made three saves to pick up her first collegiate victory.

Samantha D'Angelo accounted for the lone goal for the Jaspers (1-2-4, 0-1-0 MAAC). Margaret Brunk recorded two saves between the pipes for the home team.

Joerger opened the scoring in the 29th minute when she collected a cross from senior Skylar Cornell and beat Margaret Brunk with a shot into the upper center of the net for her first collegiate tally.

Whitaker struck less than four minutes after Joerger's opening strike, placing a free kick off the crossbar and in from just outside the box to double the Griffs advantage to 2-0.

D'Angelo got the Jaspers on the board in the 73rd minute, getting her head on Mayah Wheelers corner kick and directing into the Canisius goal to make it a 2-1 contest.

D'Angelo had a chance to tie the game in the closing minutes of regulation, but her attempt from just outside the box found the crossbar and stayed out, allowing the Griffs to hold on for the one-goal triumph.

HEAD COACH RYAN LOUIS POSTGAME COMMENTS
"I am really proud of the resilience the team showed today! We have struggled so far to put a full team performance together for 90 minutes and to do it in the opening game of MAAC play, I could not be prouder of their effort."
