Men's Soccer Falls Short in Loss to Iona

Storm Schmidt Hollensted scored in the 89th minute to break a 2-2 tie and lift Iona to a 3-2 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Chris Morandi and an own goal accounted for the the other two goals scored by the Gaels (3-2-2, 1-0-0 MAAC) while goalkeeper Fernando Alves Schmelz made three saves in net to help secure the victory for the visitors.

Sophomore Romero Nicolazzo added his third goal of the year and freshman Noah Baumslag added his second for the Golden Griffins (3-4-1, 1-1-0 MAAC). Graduate goalkeeper Dom Dominguez got the start for Canisius in net and finished with four saves.

Schmidt Hollensted's game-winning goal came with just 1:16 remaining in regulation as a scramble in the box caused the ball to fall to the feet of the graduate midfielder, who slotted the ball past Dominguez to put the Gaels in front.

The goal by Schmidt Hollensted spoiled a Griffs comeback bid that saw Baumslag tie the game in the 84th minute, curling a free kick into the bottom right corner to mark the second goal of his young collegiate career and knot the score at 2-2.

Earlier in the contest, Iona opened the scoring in the 36th minute when a cross from Chris Morandi deflected off a Canisius defender and ended up in the back of the net.

Nicolazzo responded in the 40th minute, receiving a long pass from AJ Zarcone before eluding two Gaels defenders and delivering a precise finish into the top right corner of the net to level the match at 1-1.

The Gaels reclaimed the lead in the 67th minute as a pass from Calle Sjoberg found Morandi at the top of the box. Morandi snuck the ball in the top left past a diving Dominguez to give Iona the 2-1 advantage, setting the stage for the game's frantic final moments.
