Women’s Soccer Picks Up Third Straight Win with Shutout Victory at Rider

Senior Lizzy Harkness and sophomore Azaria Fagan both scored their first goals of the season to guide Canisius to a 2-0 victory over Rider in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at Ben Cohen Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

Fagan struck for the eventual game-winning goal 30th minute while Harkness provided the insurance marker in the 79th minute to propel the Golden Griffins (3-4-0, 3-0-0 MAAC) to their third consecutive win as they opened conference play with a 3-0-0 record for the second straight season. Freshman keeper Chloe Tseros finished with two saves as she posted her first collegiate shutout and her third win of the season.

Ashley Moore turned aside six shots between the pipes for the Broncs (2-4-2, 0-2-0 MAAC).

Fagan staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute, collecting a feed from fellow sophomore Mya Jones inside the box before beating Moore with a shot to the right side.

Senior Skylar Cornell had a chance to double the Griffs advantage early in the second half, but her header from close range was corralled by a diving Moore to keep it a one-goal game.

Ava DeGeorge nearly tied the game for Rider in the 72nd minute, but her free kick from 20 yards out sailed just over the crossbar.

Harkness doubled the Canisius' advantage to 2-0 at the 78:31 mark when she headed home junior Jessica Whitaker's free kick from the middle of the box to provide the Griffs with the insurance marker.
