Men's Soccer Kicks Off MAAC Play with Win at Rider

The Canisius men's soccer team opened Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play Saturday with a 1-0 victory over Rider at Ben Cohen Field in Lawrenceville, N.J.

The first half ended at a 0-0 deadlock with the Golden Griffins' (3-3-1, 1-0-0 MAAC) goalkeeper, Dom Dominguez, making three saves.

The Broncs (1-6-1. 0-0-1 MAAC) best opportunity in the first half came early in the eighth minute when Xavi Csato had a one-on-one chance with the Griffs defender, but Dominguez's diving save denied the Broncs chance and kept the game scoreless.

Rider maintained its pressure into the second half, outshooting Canisius by an 8-1 margin after the break.

In the 67th minute, Rider's Lovra Kostanjek had a prime opportunity at the top of the box, but fired the ball high and off the mark.

The only goal of the match came in the 76th minute when a Rider defender attempted to head the ball back to the keeper, but a miscommunication on the play resulted in an own goal as the ball snuck past Broncs goalkeeper Marius Helias to lead the Griffs to victory.

Dominguez highlighted the win for the Griffs, finishing with five saves between the pipes to earn his career clean sheet in a Canisius uniform.
