Women’s Soccer Doubles Up Merrimack to Stay Unbeaten in MAAC Play

Junior midfielder Jessica Whitaker scored two goals to pace Canisius in a 4-2 victory over Merrimack in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

Senior Skylar Cornell and freshman Ailis Osmond tallied a goal and an assist each for the Golden Griffins (2-4-0, 2-0-0 MAAC), who remained undefeated in league play with Saturday's triumph. Freshman keeper Chloe Tseros notched seven saves to post her second victory of the season.

Kylie Fuller tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the campaign for the Warriors (2-4-2, 1-1-0 MAAC) while Isabella Keogh notched her third marker of the season. Kaitlyn Brewi made four stops in goal.

In a back-and-forth affair, Whitaker opened the scoring at the 14:40 mark of the contest when her shot from the top of the box deflected off a defender and into the Merrimack goal.
Cornell doubled the Griffs advantage in the 31st minute, placing sophomore Meghan Joerger's cross into the right side panel of the net for her first of the campaign to give the Griffs a 2-0 lead at the break. Keogh got the Warriors on the board in the 54th minute, collecting a long ball from Shea MacDougall in the box before beating Tseros with a shot to the left side to trim the Canisius advantage to 2-1.

Fuller brought the Warriors level in the 72nd minute when she took a feed from Liv Campbell in the middle of the box and fired a shot past Tseros to knot the score at 2-2.

Osmond restored the Griffs lead just 65 seconds after Fuller's equalizer as Osmond took a pass from Cornell in midfield and raced past a pair of Merrimack defenders before sliding the ball under an oncoming Brewi for her first collegiate tally.
Whitaker closed out the scoring with an insurance marker in the 88th minute when she collected a loose ball and snuck as shot past Brewi from the middle of the box to determine the final two-goal margin. POSTGAME COMMENTS GAME NOTES
