Softball Falls into Elimination Round with Loss to Siena

Siena's Gracie Goewey drove in the game's only run with a double in the first inning and then proceeded to fan nine Canisius batters en route to her 10th win of the season in the circle as the fourth-seeded Saint defeated the Golden Griffins 1-0 on the first day of the 2025 MAAC Softball Championship at Gartland Park in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

With the win, Siena (34-19-1) advances to the winner's bracket of the MAAC Softball Championship tournament, where the Saints will play top-seeded Marist on Thursday at 1:30 p.m., while Canisius (26-25) moves into the tournament's elimination round, where the Blue and Gold will play Iona on Thursday morning at 9 a.m.

GAME RECAP
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Siena's Emma Peterson drew a four-pitch walk. Goewey followed Peterson's base-on-balls with a double to the gap in right center. On that play, Goewey tried to stretch that double into a triple, but she was thrown at third base after freshman Tabitha von Kolen relayed the ball to shortstop Vivi Vargas, who turned and fired a strike to Morgan Cook at third base, who applied the tag. That out came after Peterson crossed the plate however, giving Siena the 1-0 lead.

Canisius had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the top-half of the fifth, but the Griffs came up empty. In that frame, junior Bailey Alatorre led off with a base hit, and she would eventually move to third after Cook and senior Alyssa Cloutier drew walks to load the bases. However, Goeway got out of the jam by getting the next two Canisius batters out to retire the side. Goewey ended up earning the win in the circle after she went the distance and allowed just two hits to go with nine strikeouts and three walks.

Canisius senior Toria Kover was the tough-luck loser in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she allowed just one run on four hits to go with four hits, three strikeouts and five walks.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius leads the all-time series with Siena 51-27, but the Saints have defeated the Griffs in each of the last six games.
• The Griffs were shut out in the MAAC Championship for the first time since May 13, 2021, when the team lost to Marist, 5-0.
• Coupled with the Griffs' 1-0 win over Sacred Heart in the day's first game, Canisius has played three one-run games in its last four outings, dating back to May 2.
• Cloutier went 1-for-1 with a double and a walk for the Griffs in the losing effort. Her double in the third inning was the Blue and Gold's only extra-base hit in either game on the day.

UP NEXT
Canisius will take on third-seeded Iona at 9 a.m, on Thursday in an elimination game. That game will be broadcast live on ESPN+. The winner of that contest will advance to meet the loser of the Fairfield-Rider game at 3:45 p.m.
