Baseball Falls on Senior Day to Niagara

Evan Wilde hit for the cycle with four RBI to lead Niagara to a 17-12 triumph over Canisius Friday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Purple Eagles continue their fight for a playoff spot, taking the series and improving to 13-16 in MAAC play and 18-27 on the season. With the loss, the Golden Griffins are eliminated from playoff contention, falling to 10-18 in league action with a 14-30 overall record.

Wilde highlighted a Niagara lineup that pounded out 20 hits in the contest, punctuated by four doubles and five home runs. Seven of the Purple Eagles' nine batters recorded an RBI, led by Wilde, Jason Green and Nate Milk, who each drove in four runs. Wilde and Vincent Mauro each went 4-for-6 on the day with Marou scoring three runs and Green scoring five runs.

Matthew DelVeccio picked up the win for the Purple Eagles after 3.2 innings of work and five runs allowed. Senior Tyler Greenleaf took the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the second inning.

Despite their struggles on the mound, the Blue and Gold were successful at the plate with three players posting multi-RBI performances. Junior Andrew Marcello posted a career-high six RBI after going 2-for-4 with a two-run double and a seventh inning grand slam. Redshirt senior Josh Niles tallied a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-5 with and RBI, while junior Owen Silliman knocked a two-run double and junior Mason Cisco went 2-for-5 with a two-run homer in the eighth.

The Purple Eagles never trailed in the contest, taking a two-run lead in the top of the second before exploding for six runs in the third and a single run in the fourth to build a 9-1 cushion.

The offense began to pick up for Canisius in the home half of the fourth as the Griffs loaded the bases followed by Marcello and Silliman hitting back-to-back two-run doubles to make it a four-run contest.

Niagara responded in top of the fifth with a Wilde home run and then tacked on five more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to stretch the lead to double digits, 15-5.

The Griffs loaded the bases again in the seventh, setting up Marcello's grand slam. Cisco hit a two-run bomb in the eighth to cut the deficit to 15-11.

Niagara put the game out of reach in the ninth, notching two runs to push its advantage to six, a margin that put a rally out of reach for the Griffs.
