Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Fitzgerald Nets Overtime Winner to Lift Women's Lacrosse Past Marist

Sophomore Maddie Fitzgerald scored 2:31 into overtime to propel Canisius to an 11-10 road victory over Marist in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday at Tenney Stadium in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

"Today was the epitome of a team win," head coach Russell Allen said. "Every single player that stepped onto the field contributed to the win in a major way."

Senior Hailey Rooney paced the Golden Griffins (5-7, 2-2 MAAC) with a first quarter hat trick and three caused turnovers while sophomore Megan Previdi tallied a team-high two assists. Sophomore Bridget Brown picked up a career-high four ground balls. Sophomore Olivia Licardi stopped eight shots to earn the win.

Chloe Birckhead paced the Red Foxes (3-10, 2-2 MAAC) as she recorded a hat trick on nine shots while teammate Jesse Manger dished out a game-best three assists. Defensively, Taija Bell caused three turnovers and Megan Morris turned away 14 shots in the loss.

Fitzgerald's overtime winner came after the Red Foxes rallied from a two-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to force the extra session.
After Marist won the opening draw of overtime, graduate student Alex Czepukaitis forced a turnover, allowing the Griffs to gain possession. Canisius worked the ball downfield before Fitzgerald was able to draw the free-position attempt, which she converted to earn the Griffs their second conference victory of the campaign.

Despite Marist striking first, Canisius responded with five of the next six goals, highlighted by the hat trick from Rooney, to hold a 5-2 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Marist opened the second quarter of play with three straight goals of its own to tie the contest with 6:48 remaining before the break. Previdi and freshman Katie Adams scored back to back goals in a matter of 41 seconds to take a 7-6 lead into intermission.

The teams exchanged tallies to start the second half before junior Maggie Tifft struck with just over 11 minutes to play in the fourth quarter to restore the Griffs two-goal cushion, 10-8. The Red Foxes once again battled back, using tallies from Manger and Catherine Windsor to tie the game and set the stage for Fitzgerald's overtime heroics.
