Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Comes Up Short in Home Loss to Rider

The visiting Rider Broncs scored twice in the first inning and added a pair of runs in the third to earn a 4-3 victory over Canisius in MAAC softball action Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

The win snapped Rider's eight-game losing skid and improved the Broncs to 9-28 overall and 3-7 in league play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 14-16 overall and 4-4 in conference action with their first home loss of the season.

GAME RECAP
In the top of the first, Rider took a 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI-double off the bat of Kiersten Buchanan, and later in the inning, Buchanan gave her team a 2-0 advantage when she scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by teammate Olivia Burroughs. In the top-half of third, Rider tacked on two more runs after Aspen Wheeler lined a base hit to left which allowed Buchanan and Abby Cruz score.

Canisius had four hits through the game's first three innings, but finally got on the scoreboard with two runs in the home-half of the fourth to trim Rider's lead to 4-2. Junior Natalie Quonce led off the fourth with a double to the gap and left center, and she scored moments later when senior Emily Ilano drilled a 2-0 offering from Rider starter Gabi Rodriguez over the fence in left for her fourth home run of the season.

In the fifth inning, Canisius had runners at second and third with one out, but only scored one run to trim Rider's cushion to 4-3. Ilano dropped down a bunt in an effort to squeeze home freshman pinch-runner Bella Martin, but Rider relief pitcher Fallyn Stoeckel was able to flip the ball to the plate, where Martin was tagged out. As the play was being made at the dish, Ilano took off for second base and beat the throw from Cruz. On that play, the ball got away from Rider centerfielder Shea Johnson, who was covering second base, allowing Quonce to score from third base. However, Stoeckel got out of the jam by striking out the next Canisius batter at the plate to end the frame.

Canisius had a pair of runners in scoring position in the sixth and had the game-tying run on base in the seventh, but the Griffs could not score in either frame. Stoeckel ended up earning the win in the circle for Rider after she gave up one unearned run while scattering seven hits to go with two strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work. Canisius starter Toria Kover took the loss for the Blue and Gold after she gave up four runs, two earned, on two hits while walking three and striking out two. Senior Kate Wiggins tossed 4.2 innings of scoreless relief and matched a career-high with four strikeouts.

Seniors Rosie Gomez and Alyssa Cloutier each had three hits in the losing cause for the Griffs, while Quonce had three hits and scored two of the team's three runs on the day. Freshman Vivi Vargas went 2-for-3 with a double, while Ilano drove in a pair and scored a run with her two-run shot in the fourth.
