Softball Scores Home Win Over Quinnipiac

The Canisius softball team scored four times in the third and tacked on a pair of insurance runs late to record a 6-4 home victory over Quinnipiac in the first game of a MAAC doubleheader Wednesday morning at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The second game of the league twinbill was officially halted after the ninth inning with the score tied 3-3 because of a facility conflict with the Canisius women's lacrosse game at the Demske. Per MAAC rules, the halted game will be resumed in the 10th inning at a date and time to be announced by the two schools and the league office.

The game one victory improved Canisius to 15-16 overall and 5-4 in MAAC play, while Quinnipiac fell to 10-19 overall and 5-5 in league action with the loss.

GAME ONE RECAP
Quinnipiac jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after two innings of play with a run in the first and then two more runs in the top-half of the second. Quinnipiac's Mary Fogg started the day off with a lead-off double and then scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Natalia Apatiga in the first. In the second, Quinnipiac's Madison Waltke led off with a triple down the right field line and scored moments later on Ella McGalliard's two-run home run over the fence in left.

In the home-half of the third, Canisius took advantage of two Quinnipiac fielding errors to score four times to take a 4-3 lead. With the bases loaded and two outs in that frame, senior Rosie Gomez reached on a fielder's choice and drove in fellow senior Alyssa Cloutier to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Bobcats. Canisius cut the Quinnipiac lead to 3-2 moments later when a pitch with the bases loaded hit junior Bailey Alatorre. Then senior Emily Ilano followed with the Blue and Gold's first hit of the day, a base knock to centerfield that allowed Gomez and sophomore Ella Johel to score.

In the fourth, Canisius pushed its lead to 5-3 thanks to a sacrifice fly to left by Johel which allowed freshman Vivi Vargas to score from third base. In the sixth, Apatiga led off with a solo homer to left to make the score 5-4, but the Blue and Gold got that run back and pushed their lead to 6-4 in the bottom half of that inning on junior Sofia Escoto's leadoff homer over the fence in the gap in left-center.

Quinnipiac had a runner at first with one out in the seventh, but Canisius starter Olivia Manchester closed the door on the Bobcats by retiring the final two batters she faced to earn her team-leading 10th win of the season in the circle. Manchester earned the win after she went the distance and allowed four runs on six hits while fanning four.

The Griffs banged out six hits in the winning effort, with Escoto's homer serving as the team's only extra base hit of the game. She finished the day by going 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI.

GAME TWO RECAP
With the second game of the day tied at 1-1 heading into the home-half of the third, Canisius took a 2-1 lead in that frame thanks to an RBI-single by Escoto that pushed Alatorre across the plate. Quinnipiac tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth, but Canisius quickly answered with a run in the bottom of that inning to regain the 3-2 lead.

In the fifth inning, Gomez put the Griffs on top at 3-2 with her sixth homer of the season, a leadoff solo shot over the fence in left. The Blue and Gold held that lead until the top of the seventh, when Quinnipiac catcher Kennedy Demott led off the inning with a solo homer to left to knot the game at 3-3.

Canisius had a pair of runners on with one out in the seventh, but could not score, forcing the game into extra innings. After both teams went down in order in the eighth, Quinnipiac had the go-ahead run on second with two outs, but reliever Kate Wiggins got a ground ball out to end that threat. In the ninth, Canisius had the bases loaded with two outs, but Quinnipiac pitcher Sydney Horan got a pop-up to end the inning, as the Griffs finished the day when the game was halted by leaving 11 runners on base.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius' win in game one extended the Griffs' win streak over Quinnipiac to 11 straight, dating back to 2019.
• Freshman Tabitha von Kolen extended her hit streak to a season-long four games with her base hit in the first game of the day.
• Ilano's two RBI in the game-one win marked the sixth time this season she's driven in two runs in a game.
• Manchester has fanned multiple batters in eight of her last nine appearances in the circle, dating back to March 15.
