Quinnipiac Defeats Softball in Completion of Halted Game

Quinnipiac scored a pair of runs in the top-half of the 10th inning and then got out of a jam in the bottom of the frame to secure a 5-3 victory over Canisius in MAAC softball action Monday afternoon at Quinnipiac Softball Field in Hamden, Conn.

The game on Monday completed a halted game between the Golden Griffins and the Bobcats from back on April 9. Per the MAAC by-laws, halted conference games must be resumed and played to completion.

The win moved Quinnipiac to 19-23 overall and 14-8 in league play, while Canisius fell to 21-24 overall and 11-10 in conference action.

GAME RECAP
Quinnipiac led off the resumption of the halted game on Monday by scoring two times with two outs in the top-half of the 10th off Canisius reliever Olivia Manchester. After Manchester retired the first two Quinnipiac hitters, Natalia Apatiga kept the inning alive for the Bobctas with a triple down the line in right. An RBI-single to left by Riley Potter allowed Apatiga to score the eventual game-winning run, and Potter was able to scramble to second base after a throwing error by the Canisius defense. Potter scored the fifth run of the game for the Bobcats moments later after Madison Waltke lined her first career triple off the base of the fence in centerfield.

In the Griffs' half of the 10th, Canisius had runners at first and second with one out, but the Blue and Gold were unable to score in the frame. Quinnipiac catcher Kennedy Demott fielded a bunt in front of the plate and threw out a Canisius base runner heading to third base for the second out of the inning, and Quinnipiac pitcher Sydney Horan closed the door with her ninth strikeout of the game to seal the victory for the Bobcats.

Back on April 9, in the second game of a MAAC doubleheader at the Demske Sports Complex, senior Rosie Gomez gave the Griffs and early 1-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a double to centerfield which allowed freshman Tabitha von Kolen to score. After Quinnipiac tied the game at 1-1 in the second, Canisius regained the lead in the home-half of the third on an RBI-single off the bat of junior Sofia Escoto.

Gomez put the Griffs in the lead at 3-2 in the fifth with a long homer over the fence in left field, but the Bobcats tied the game at 3-3 in the seventh after Demott led off the frame with a solo shot over the fence in left. Both teams had a chance to win the game in the ninth inning, but both teams came up empty in that frame. In the bottom of the ninth, Canisius had the bases loaded with two outs before Horan got a pop-up in foul territory to end the threat. At that time, the game was halted because of the Canisius women's lacrosse home game at the Demske Sports Complex that day, forcing the completion date of the contest to be moved to today.

von Kolen recorded five of the Griffs' 11 hits in the loss, as she went 5-for-6 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base. Gomez had three hits, including her double and home run, and she also drove in a pair of runs in the losing effort.

GAME NOTES
• The loss on Monday ended Canisius' 11-game win streak over Quinnipiac, which dated back to 2019.

• Gomez's home run in this game gives her nine homers this season, which is a career high.
