Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Ends Losing Skid With Sweep at Manhattan

Canisius ended its season-long seven-game losing streak with a pair of road wins at Manhattan in MAAC softball action Tuesday afternoon at Gaelic Park in Riverdale, N.Y.

In the first game, Canisius freshman Tabitha von Kolen scored on a wild pitch in the third to help lift Canisius to a 4-3 victory and in the second game, senior Toria Kover tossed a complete-game two-hitter as the Blue and Gold exploded for a 15-1 mercy-rule win.

The two wins moved the Golden Griffins to 23-24 overall and 13-10 in MAAC play while Manhattan, which has now lost 10 straight, fell to 10-31 overall and 7-15 in league games.

GAME ONE RECAP
The Griffs scored three times in the second inning and then added the eventual game-winning run in the top-half of the third en route to the 4-3 win in the day's first game at Manhattan. Canisius' first run came thanks to a sacrifice-bunt by senior Morgan Cook, which allowed freshman Cara Edwards to score from third. Moments later, the Griffs made the score 2-0 when junior Sofia Escoto scored from third on a wild pitch by Manhattan pitcher Karissa Spring, and the Griffs capped the frame's scoring when Cook crossed the plate on a sac-fly by freshman Vivi Vargas.

Canisius took a 4-0 lead in the top-half of the third when von Kolen scored on a second wild pitch by Spring. The Jaspers answered with three runs in the home-half of that inning to make the score 4-3, but those were the only three runs Manhattan would score off Canisius starter Olivia Manchester, who earned her team-leading 15th win of the season in the circle after she scattered nine hits over 7.0 innings to go along with four strikeouts and three walks. Manhattan threatened in the bottom of the seventh with runners on the corners and two outs, but Manchester got Spring to foul out to first to seal the victory, ending the team's seven-game losing skid.

The Griffs had just four hits off Spring in the win, and Escoto's double in the second was the Blue and Gold's only extra-base hit in the victory. Canisius stole three bases in the contest, with von Kolen swiping two bags and senior Rosie Gomez recording her first career steal.

GAME TWO RECAP
Canisius exploded for 15 runs on 13 hits and took advantage of four Manhattan errors in the Griffs' 15-1 mercy-rule victory. The 15 runs were more than enough support for Kover, who picked up her fourth win of the season after she allowed just one run on two hits to go with three strikeouts in her fourth complete-game effort of the season.

The Griffs took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to a base hit by Ella Johel that plated von Kolen and senior Alyssa Cloutier. Manhattan responded, however, scoring a run in the bottom of the first frame to make the score 2-1 in favor of Canisius after Lindsey Hoag ripped an RBI-double down the left field line.

From there, Canisius took over, scoring two runs in the second, eight in the third and then three more times in the fourth. In those three innings, Canisius sent 28 batters to the plate to face three different Manhattan pitchers. Canisius' 13 runs in those innings came on the power of 14 hits, highlighted by a two-run homer from junior Bailey Alatorre and a three-run homer by Gomez in the third and a two-run shot by Escoto in the fourth. In the second inning, Cloutier drove in two runs with a triple, her first of the season, and in the fourth, Edwards drove in a pair of runs with her first collegiate double.
