Softball Swept by Siena in MAAC Doubleheader

Siena's Emma Peterson scored runs and has two RBI, while two Saints' pitchers held Canisius to a total of two runs on eight hits in two games, as Siena swept the Golden Griffins by scores of 5-1 and 6-1 in a MAAC softball doubleheader Friday afternoon at Siena Field in Loundonville, N.Y.

For Canisius, freshman Cara Edwards and junior Sofia Escoto each had a solo home run on the day. Edwards led off the seventh inning of game one with her sixth homer of the season, while Escoto's long ball led off the top-half of the sixth in the day's second contest.

With the two wins, Siena improved to 28-18-1 overall and 12-7-1 in league play, while the Griffs fell to 21-22 overall and 11-8 in MAAC play. Canisius has now lost five straight.

GAME ONE RECAP
The host Saints scored twice in the bottom of the first and tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning en route to the 5-1 victory in the first game of the day. Peterson drove in a pair of runs for the Saints and starting pitcher Gracie Goewey earned her sixth win of the year in the circle after she allowed just one run on five hits to go with 10 strikeouts.

Peterson's RBI-single in the first put the home team on the board first, and moments later, Peterson scored from third thanks to a sac-fly off the bat of teammate Cali DeLawder to give Siena the 2-0 advantage.

In the fifth inning, Siena took advantage of two Canisius errors to score three times for a 5-0 lead. One of those runs was driven in by Peterson, who later scored on a Canisius error. In the seventh inning, Canisius finally got on the board thanks Edwards' solo homer to start the seventh. That hit, one of the team's two extra-base hits in the loss, was her sixth home run of the season.

Sophomore Ella Johel went 1-for-3 with a double in game one, while freshman Vivi Vargas reached base twice with a single and after she was hit-by-pitch in the top-half of the seventh. Canisius starter Olivia Manchester took the loss in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she allowed five runs, three earned, on seven hits to go with six strikeouts and a walk.

GAME TWO RECAP
Siena scored a run in the first inning and then crossed the plate four times in the third to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. In the first, Peterson scored the game's first run, and in the third inning, she scored on a base hit to left off the bat of teammate Gianna DiMeglio to give the home team a 3-0 advantage. DeMeglio and Goewey scored moments later on an RBI-single back through the box by Ella Milante.

Trailing 6-0 in the sixth, Escoto led off the frame with her third homer of the season off winning pitcher Kaycie Kennedy. Kennedy moved her record to 9-7 on the season after she allowed just the one run on three hits to go with seven strikeouts and a walk in a complete-game effort.

Canisius starter Toria Kover took the loss for the Griffs after she gave up five runs, three earned, on five hits in 2.1 innings of work. Senior Kate Wiggins came on in relief of Kover and gave up a run on four hits to go with three walks and two strikeouts in 3.2 innings.
